Unmanned Aerial Systems Training Centre


In September 2017, UTC Co. Ltd. appointed AIRWORKS PLT to establish a UTC (Unmanned Aerial Systems Training Center) campus in Malaysia.

AIRWORKS is the appointed training partner of DJI’s UTC (Unmanned Aerial Systems Training Centre), Aiming at UAV professional application, we offer a full range of training programs including introductory courses for UAV operator and advanced professional courses for selected industries, such as aerial photography, precision agriculture, search-and-rescue, traffic monitoring and analysis, construction and site inspection, mobile telecommunication inspection, oil and gas inspection and more.

AIRWORKS has a robust faculty team consisting of professors and certified drone specialists who have long standing experience in professional drone operations and applications. The team has received specialised master training by UTC Co. Ltd. in Shenzhen, China to deliver professional training courses in accordance with DJI and UTC standards and requirements.

Professor Dr. Voon-Chet KOO a graduate of the University of Malaya with MEngSc and PhD degrees in Microwave Engineering from the Multimedia University, Malaysia. He is currently a full Professor of Multimedia University with research in remote sensing technologies, signal processing, and embedded system design. Prof Koo is a principal consultant for various government agencies and engineering firms and has published more than 100 papers in refereed journals, international conferences, 2 books, and holds 8 patents. His current interests include drone-based smart sensing solutions for environmental monitoring and smart city surveillance.

Associate Professor Dr Tien Sze LIM received his B.Eng (Hons) and M.Eng.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from the University Technology of Malaysia and obtained his Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from the Multimedia University Malaysia. He is currently an Associate Professor with the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Multimedia University. His research interests include remote sensing technologies, drone design, signal processing and embedded system design. Assoc. Prof Lim has been a principal consultant for various government agencies in remote sensing projects and has published more than 50 papers in refereed journals, presented at international conferences, written 2 books, and holds 2 patents. Dr. Lim is a member of The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and member of Board of Engineers Malaysia.

Wen-Guey CHEAW, graduated from Multimedia University in 2009 and received his M.EngSc in processor design from Multimedia University in 2017. His research interests include remote sensing technologies, embedded system design and drones. Mr. Cheaw has published 2 papers and has been a research fellow at Chiba University, Japan. He currently develops and deploys drones for industrial use. He has constructed various drones ranging from small quadcopters to large octacopters. These drones are controlled with DJI systems as well as integration with other systems such as LiDAR systems and scatterometers. Mr. Cheaw is also actively using DJI drones to do survey measurements of landslides and plantations for Public Works and agriculture estates.

UTC Malaysia campus is the first international UTC outside of China and is an extension of the GKS Hobby Group’s 10-year association with DJI. Having built up a strong support network of UAV stakeholders throughout the years and frequently consulted on applied UAV technologies and solutions for professional and commercial workflows, the Malaysian campus was step up to complete the full range of DJI dealerships to serve our clients.

Located on the fringe of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s capital city, our campus is anchored by a robust faculty team of senior academia from local universities specializing in remote sensing technologies and is fully certified by UTC Co. Ltd.

The campus provides a full spread of courses and scopes covering the Basics → Advanced → Professional → Certified levels for the hobbyist to specialist aerial inspector and surveyor.

We provide our public and commercial clients with the A → Z of Unmanned Aviation.


Campus Malaysia – Description


Our instructors have many years of flight and teaching experience, are vetted by UTC for approval before receiving training and finally training accreditation in China. UTC training content are localised by our Malaysian Faculty Team to provide relevancy and compliance with Malaysian laws, regulations and safety protocols and our courses are currently being put through endorsement by the Malaysian DCA.

Our UTC training consists of a well-balanced classroom learning, hands-on UAS maintenance, simulator & practical flight experience and specialized application training.

In addition to classrooms and flying grounds, mock-ups and applied scenarios are provided for students to train with.

On-site customized courses for enterprises are available on request.


Certifications


Together with industrial experts, UTC creates a scientific system for Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) application ability assessment. All trainees will be required to take the standard testing after the training course, including theory exam and practice test. A UTC Certificate will be issued for those who pass the tests, as a recognition of related UAS operation and application ability.
